Portable Career Planning

The Background
Portable Career Planning was born out of frustration, stubbornness, passion and innovation. I, Stacy, married my husband knowing very little about what this lifestyle was like, other than what I found online and saw on the news. I had a great career after finishing my Bachelor’s degree, and left it to move 3,000 miles across the country to be with a man. Looking back, I can’t believe my parents didn’t kill me.

I was bright-eyed and busy-tailed, but I was realistic in knowing that I would be moving frequently.

I sought out the advice of career development at my college, but they didn’t have knowledge of the military world.

I sought out the advice of career counselors who knew about the military life, but they didn’t acknowledge my life beyond my husband.

It felt like I was straddling two very different worlds, and there was no way to mesh the two. I was a contradiction. At least…that was how I felt. I began to question and ultimately believe I was the only military spouse out there who wanted a life for myself outside of my husband. “I must be the only one,” I’d often say to myself out of frustration.

The Birth of Portable Career Planning
This is where my trait of stubbornness really came in handy! I decided to do something about a system that seemed broken. I decided to start listening to military spouses on my own and hearing what they really wanted. As time passed, I found more and more spouses who were making a life for themselves, who wanted personal fulfillment but didn’t know how to find it, and who knew there was something more inside of themselves but had lost sight of what that was over time. I was inspired by these women, and it spurred me on to keep going with what is now Portable Career Planning.
