Over the time I’ve been helping military spouses with their career progression, I’ve come to realize that there is a particular type of person who really gets the most from working with me. If the description below sounds familiar, it’s very likely you and I will make a great team.
(If this isn’t you, that’s cool too, but we’re probably not going to be a good fit. If you still want some help, I welcome you to reach out on my contact form anyway, and I’ll happily recommend some resources that might be a better fit.)
Does This Sound Like You?
You find it frustrating…perhaps even a little insulting…that most of the career advice for military spouses sets such low standards and expectations. I have been there. In fact, it’s why I started Portable Career Planning. If you want someone to hold you accountable, to tell you it IS possible to do what you love, and who has high expectations for your success, I’m your girl. I have to warn you that this does mean I will require you to work hard, I will hold you to high standards, and I will challenge you to challenge yourself.
You know that having a career that’s portable is important but don’t think it has to come at the expense of doing what you love. My guess is that you probably think you are one of the only people who feels this way. Don’t worry about that because it’s not true. There are a lot of us “believers” out there. Overlooking personal fulfillment is why you see so many military spouses in jobs that are not good fits and that they absolutely hate.
You are proud of your spouse for serving the country but are tired of constantly compromising your career. Let’s be honest about this—because I can’t help if you aren’t. I know it’s downright frustrating to have to start over every time you move because I’ve been there. It can make ever having a career you love seem hopeless. I am here to tell you that just because it’s hard doesn’t make it impossible. You simply have to want a career you love more than the comfort of holding on to the routines that aren’t working.
You are willing and committed to make whatever changes you need to in order to progress in your career—You just may not have figured out what those changes need to be yet (and that’s okay). That commitment to your career and yourself is so important because the rest (you know…like figuring out the best path to get you from where you are now to where you want to be) I can teach you. What doesn’t work is when I want success for someone more than they want it for themselves.
You don’t want the skills, past experience and education you worked so hard on to go to waste simply because you married someone in the military. You know that every day spent looking for a job or working in a profession you don’t like is one day less that you are able to progress in your career goals.
Do any of these situations sound familiar? Let’s see if I can help…
You have tried career counseling before but wanted something more tailored to your particular situation and less like lip service. I compare bad career advice with a fad diet or the latest exercise craze. It can definitely work, but you will know immediately if it’s not right for you. How? Well, by the results—or lack thereof. You won’t stick with something if it’s not right for you, and what works for your friend down the street might not be the best fit for you. If I was told that I could lose 50 pounds guaranteed by running, those 50 pounds would stay right where they are!
I hate running.
—but if I took the cookie cutter approach, I might start running and end up doing more harm than good! You see, career guidance is no different. We all need to find something we can stick with, and more importantly LIVE with!
The only jobs you seem to be able to find are those you are overqualified for—Perhaps you even took one of these “filler” jobs just to have something on your resume. You are using the job boards, networking like it’s your full-time job, and you are still getting nothing more than entry-level jobs that pay less than you desire and don’t utilize your full skill sets. You know you have more to offer, but you just can’t find the jobs. That’s because job boards are now becoming obsolete (I know, it sounds crazy—but you wouldn’t be here if it still worked) and fishing for jobs (err…I mean, networking) has become the norm. If you are going to stand out, we’re going to have to come up with a really solid plan to get you noticed—and it’s going to involve a lot more than just a resume and a networking event!
You know what you want to do but not if it’s portable. Maybe you haven’t done anything to advance that passion of yours because you don’t know what your next step should be. Before you invest a lot of time and money into a degree, training, or launching a business, let’s do some research together to figure if your dream profession is actually packable! We’ll get down and dirty and do our own reconnaissance—career style!
Mama wants some new shoes! Don’t we all? You may have had the luxury of a great career in the past and with it, the disposable income to buy what you wanted when you wanted it. You’re not struggling to make ends meet, but it was kind of nice back when you had the comforts of a two-income family. Let’s get you back to that comfort zone again so you can indulge every once in a while and not have to worry.
